Nikon Coolpix W100 Wi-Fi Shock & Waterproof Digital Camera – Best Value

The Nikon Coolpix W100 is a tough, inexpensive camera at a reasonable price.  This is not a camera to get if you want professional results.  But this is a waterproof camera that is easy and shock-proof enough for a kid to use.

It is shockproof and waterproof.  It’s picture quality under bright light is similar to that taken from a good smartphone.

Simplified controls and large buttons make it easy for kids to use, and Wi-Fi and NFC are included for seamless image transfer to your smartphone.  The real benefits are the low cost and sturdy design. If you’re looking for a point-and-shoot you don’t have to worry about breaking and that won’t break the bank, give the W100 a shot.

If you’re serious about photography, you’ll miss the ability to set the shutter speed, aperture, or ISO manually. But that won’t bother most casual users, who want the camera to capture pleasing photos without any fiddling.

In a test, the battery lasted more than 3 hours.

The downside is there is no manual settings to control the ISO or shutter speed.  So if you are a professional photographer, this camera is not for you.  However, if you want something fun and durable for the family, this is the one.

Overall, it’s a great little camera for the price to pay.

SeaLife DC2000 Underwater Camera – Best Depth Camera

The SeaLife DC2000 is a capable point-and-shoot camera on land and under the sea, thanks to a crisp, bright lens and 1-inch image sensor.  It is rugged, waterproof and compact.  This camera is built to withstand abuse and is strong option for underwater photographers who do not need need a zoom lens.

It’s rated to survive drops from heights of about 5 feet, and is waterproof to 60 feet.

The lens is an 11.6mm f/1.8 prime, delivering a field of view roughly equivalent to 31mm on a full-frame system. The moderate wide angle, just slightly narrower than an iPhone rear camera, is a solid focal length for travel and snapshots. The DC2000 has a strong macro capability, locking on to subjects as little as 3.5 inches away from the lens. If you want to shoot at a wider angle, consider the Fisheye Wide Angle Lens add-on. It adds $279 to the cost, widens the field of view to a 19mm equivalent, and can be attached or detached while underwater.

It’s a camera that delivers excellent image quality.  But it’s not necessarily a crowd-pleaser—the lack of zoom power and generally slow operation make it a niche camera

GoPro Hero 7 Black – Lightest

GoPro Hero 7 is an Action Camera that is suitable for many types of underwater and outdoor work. Its small, go-anywhere designs and ultra-wide lenses make them ideal for mobile photograph taking and mounting—whether it be to a surfboard or dive helmet—and it is built tough.

This camera can go down to 33 feet underwater without needing an external casing.

This unit has voice control and several other new features, including improved audio, live-streaming to sites like Facebook and a fancy new timelapse mode called “TimeWarp”.

The cons of this model is that its battery life could have been better. You can’t live stream and record in 4K though.  The most we can do is 1080p.

Fujifilm Disposable QuickSnap Waterproof Camera – Best Budget

If you’re on a budget, or just want an old-school aesthetic, a disposable, waterproof film-based camera is still a thing you can buy today.

For the low cost, you get the Fujfiilm QuickSnap, which is loaded with a 27-shot roll of Superia 800 color film and is rated to survive pressure at depths of up to 35 feet.  Do note that you need to take out the color film and take it out for film processing (unlike the mainstream digital camera currently).

With its 800iso grain film and no flash, you’ll only want to shoot it in daylight or underwater that’s being hit by light. It produces better slightly better skin tones than the Fuji QuickSnap and does better in low light due to its 800iso film.

To operate the camera, you simple point where you want to shoot and gently push the lever down. When you push the over-sized shutter release lever down, there is no sound, so pay attention because you really are taking a photo. Once you have taken the photo, simply wind the exposure knob until you can’t wind it anymore. You are then ready to take the next photo.
